On a day where temperatures reached 102 degrees, Cole Hamels managed to be even hotter, pitching eight innings of one run ball while striking out ten in a 3-1 Phillies win over the San Diego Padres. The Phillies only had six hits in the game, but used them well as Carlos Ruiz and John Mayberry each had RBI doubles. The Padres only had three hits and after the 5th inning, they didn’t reach base. Ryan Madson picked up his first save since coming off the DL and Cory Luebke took the loss for the Padres. Luekbe went five innings and left because of a pitch count of 110. The Phillies moved to 62-36 on the year while the Padres fell to 44-56. The pitching matchup for tomorrow’s 4:10 PM game on Fox features Mat Latos for San Diego and Kyle Kendrick for Philadelphia.
Shane Victorino lead off the second inning by reaching second base on a Jason Bartlett error. Carlos Ruiz would then hit a fly ball to deep center which just escaped the wickets of Cameron Maybin’s glove allowing Victorino to score. The play was originally ruled an error, but was later changed to a double. Shane would score the Phillies second run in the 4th inning when Cory Luebke balked him home. John Mayberry followed the balk with an RBI double that scored Ruiz. One of the Padres’ opportunities to score came in the bottom of that inning when Chase Headley came to the plate with runners on first and second with nobody out. Headley hit a weak ground ball to second, leading to a double play. The following batter, Ryan Ludwick grounded out and the threat was over. San Diego scored their only run in the 5th. Cameron Maybin, who was absolutely on fire in his previous series, singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on a ground out. An Alberto Gonzalez ground out scored Maybin. After the fifth inning, both teams combined for just two baserunners as the combination of Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, and San Diego’s bullpen was outstanding.
-The Phillies’ retro uniforms were awesome and I wished they used them more. The powder blues are still my personal favorite though.
-The Padres retro…not very good
– Speaking of retro uniforms…
– How awkward is Sarge Matthews?
-When Michael Martinez hit a foul ball off his ankle in the third inning, Chris Wheeler said this “The last thing the Phillies want to do is lose Michael Martinez.” HAHA
– Michael Martinez is 7-21 since I wrote this.
– Nice play by Alberto Gonzalez to rob Ryan Howard of a base hit and a RBI in the third inning.
-Potential future Phillies, Mike Adams and Heath Bell did not pitch in the game.
-2:18 Game time, If I were at the game, I’d feel cheated.
