Kendrick throws a gem, world likely to end tomorrow.

Kyle Kendrick and David Herndon threw a combined four hit shutout over the Colorado Rockies. It was announced soon after the game that the Rockies would forfeit the rest of the season in shame. (Just kidding.) In what was likely Kendrick’s final start before Roy Oswalt’s return, he was masterful, striking out seven (career high) and gave up just four hits in a 5-0 win for the Phillies. David Herndon, in another shocking development, pitched a 1,2,3 inning in the ninth. Ryan Howard hit two solo home runs while his “protection” Hunter Pence had two doubles and a RBI.  The Phillies moved to 70-39 on the season and won their 11th out of their last 12 series. Their lead in the National League East also grew to eight games as the Atlanta Braves took one on the chin against the Washington Nationals.

In a battle of bad sinkerball pitchers, Rockies’ starter Aaron Cook found himself behind the eight ball when he gave up two runs in the first inning. After a Jimmy Rollins walk, Shane Victorino’s single advanced him to third. The next batter, Chase Utley would ground out to second which allowed Rollins to score. Two batters later, Hunter Pence would double to left scoring Victorino.  Kendrick would allow two base runners to reach in the first inning, but after Seth Smith struck out looking to end the inning, that was pretty much it offensively for the Rockies.  The Rockies would have six base runners the entire night and none of them reached third base.  The Phillies would score three more times, two coming via Ryan Howard solo home runs and the other coming on a Brian Schneider sac fly. The Phillies go for the sweep with Roy Halladay on the mound against Jason Hammel for the Rockies.

Notes:

-Clutch at bat by Pence in the first inning to get the run home with two outs.

-Kyle Kendrick had a career high seven strikeouts. Eric Young, Dexter Fowler, Seth Smith, Chris Iannetta, and Mark Ellis should all be forced into early retirement. Fowler and Smith should lose their pension for striking out twice.

-Stupid baseball stat- In games started by Brian Schneider, the Phillies are 19-3.

– Did anyone see the fan wearing the random Aaron Hill jersey?  Blue Jays Aaron Hill jersey at a Rockies, Phillies game? Makes sense.

– Kyle Kendrick is hitting .263 on the season which is higher than Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez’s batting average.  It’s also one point lower than Jimmy Rollins’ average. What can’t Kyle Kendrick do?

-The Phillies didn’t get their 70th win last year until August 22nd.

– This was the Phillies’ 14th shut out of the season.

-The Phillies have had three shut outs in their history at Coors Field. Tonight, 2006, and 1997. Any idea who started the game in 1997?

Matt Beech threw seven innings in the Phillies' first shut out at Coors Field in the 1997.Things like this happen when Kyle Kendrick and David Herndon combine to throw shut outs at Coors Field. Crazy game tonight
