The Phillies had 13 hits and 3 home runs in a 9-2 beat down of the San Francisco Giants. John Mayberry and Hunter Pence each homered for the second consecutive game, while Shane Victorino also got in the act. This game will always be remembered for the bench clearing brawl that occurred in the 6th inning. After Giants reliever Ramon Ramirez plunked Shane Victorino to loaded the bases with two out, Victorino took several steps towards the mound. Ramirez sprinted towards Victorino while his catcher Eli Whiteside dove for the knees of a charging Placido Polanco. The benches cleared and several punches were thrown. For video proof of what happened, watch this. Vance Worley got the win for the Phillies, pitching seven innings of two run ball. Jonathan Sanchez, in his first start since coming off the DL, went 4 and 2/3 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on seven hits, taking the loss. The Phillies had 4 hitters with two hits as they moved their record 73-39 with the win. The series continues at 4:10 with Cole Hamels and Matt Cain taking the mound on Fox.
With a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning, Jonathan Sanchez was dealing. He allowed just one walk and one hit the first time through the Phillies batting order. However, it fell apart for him in the fourth. Victorino hit a one out solo home run to left. After Chase Utley and Hunter Pence singled, Raul Ibanez beat out a slow grounder that could have been a double play which allowed Utley to score. The next batter, John Mayberry hit a towering home run to left and quickly it was 4-1. The Phillies would add-on with a Placido Polanco RBI single in the next inning and that was all she wrote for Sanchez. After a gray haired Eli Whiteside solo home run in the bottom of the 5th, the Phillies put it away in the 6th. A Brian Schneider RBI single (on a 3-0 count I might add) was followed by a Jimmy Rollins two run single pushing the lead to 8-2. The following batter Shane Victorino was plunked and the fisticuffs began. Victorino, Whiteside, and Ramirez were ejected. In the seventh inning, Hunter Pence wrapped up the scoring with a monster home run to left.
-Eli Whiteside needs to invest in Just for Men.
-Phillies are 7-0 in games played by Hunter Pence
-Why did Brian Schneider get a 3-0 green light?
-Vance Worley left seven tickets for his family and one ticket for his barber. haha
-In Brian Schneider starts, the Phillies are 20-3. Chooch better watch his back.
-The Phillies have already clinched at least a .500 record on the West Coast trip.
