Cliff Lee does it all

Cliff Lee pitched eight shut out innings and hit a home run as the Phillies defeated the Dodgers 2-1 on Tuesday.  It was Lee’s second home run of the season. After the Dodgers squandered a first and third nobody out situation in the first inning, Cliff was masterful.  Lee only gave up two hits from the second inning on. Ryan Madson struggled in the ninth, giving up a run, but picked up his 21st save of the season. Dodgers’ starter Ted Lilly took the tough loss, going eight innings and allowing just two runs.  The Phillies are 76-40, the most games over .500 since the 1977 team.  They go for the sweep with Vance Worley on the mound vs. Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers.

The Phillies had a chance to get things started early in the first inning. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino led off the game with singles. Chase Utley would then hit a ground ball to Dodgers’ shortstop Dee Gordon who caught it on a short hop. Flash’s kid tagged Rollins and step on second base for a double play.  Ryan Howard grounded out ending the threat.  The Dodgers had a huge scoring chance in the first when Gordon singled, stole second and then reached third on a Jamey Carroll bunt single.  However, the Dodgers’ big boppers Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp struck out. Aaron Miles popped out and Lee worked his way out of that huge jam. Wilson Valdez led off the third inning with a single and advanced to second on a Lee sacrifice.  Jimmy Rollins followed with an RBI double.  Cliff would add an insurance run in the seventh inning when he hit a bomb to right field for a solo shot.  It was a legit home run, not a cheapy. Madson would give up a Casey Blake RBI single in the ninth inning, but got Rod Barajas to strike out to end the game.

-If Rod Barajas hit a walk off home run, I might have driven into a telephone pole.

– Cliff Lee has a 17 and 1/3 innings scoreless streak. Here we go again.

– Hunter Pence has a hit in 10 of 11 games as a Phillie.

-Lilly and Lee were dealing tonight. Rollins’ RBI double was a bloop.  Lilly was really unlucky. I guess you deserve to lose though if you give up a bomb to the opposing pitcher right?

-It was Wheel’s birthday. I wonder how many Wheels’ drinking games were being played.

– I don’t know if Dee Gordon is going to be a good player, but he is fun to watch. Unlike his father during his Phillies career.

-9-1 or 8-2 West Coast trip is phenomenal.

-Random thought- Thank you Joey Votto for ruining my eight game hitting streak for my MLB Beat the Streak.

Nice tag idiot.
