Hawksworth pulls a Broxton, Phils win.

The Phillies fought all the way  from being down 6-0 in the third inning to come back and win 9-8 over the Los Angeles Dodgers today. The win finished off a sweep of the Dodgers and completed a 9-1 West Coast trip, the first in franchise history. Kyle Kendrick picked up the win after Phillies starter Vance Worley could only go four innings. Blake Hawksworth, pulling his best Jonathan Broxton impersonation, took the loss giving up a two run game winning home run to Ryan Howard. Ryan Madson, pitching his third day in a row, picked up his 22nd save in 23 save opportunities. The Phillies are off tomorrow before taking on the Washington Nationals at home. The Phils completed a 20 games in 20 day stretch at 16-4. WHAT?

You knew it was going to be a “goofy” game as Wheels would say after the first batter.  Jimmy Rollins had a 16 pitch at bat against Dodgers’ starter Chad Billingsley before popping out. Billingsley had a 30 pitch first inning, but didn’t allow a run. Vance Worley was terrible to start allowing 5 first inning runs.  Juan Rivera hit a three run home run in the inning along with a Matt Kemp RBI single and Dioner Navarro RBI double.  Navarro added a sac fly in the third inning as he was seeking revenge for the 2008 World Series.  The Phillies started their comeback in the 4th inning off of Billingsley. Howard led off with a walk and Hunter Pence (that guy again) hit a two run bomb to center.  Vance Worley even got into the act when he singled in Michael Martinez, cutting the deficit in half.  In the fifth inning with two runners on and one out, Casey Blake  booted a ball that allowed Shane Victorino to score. (Very similar to the Blake error that started another great Phillies comeback last year) The next batter, Raul Ibanez hit a ground out that scored Howard to cut the Dodgers’ lead to 6-5.  Kyle Kendrick would give up a James Loney RBI double in the 6th to make it 7-5.  The Fightin Phils were not shaken. They completed the comeback in the bottom of the 6th.  Dodgers’ reliever Blake Hawksworth allowed a single to Rollins to create a first and third situation with one out. He got Victorino to strike out, but Rollins stole second. Chase Utley then had a clutch two out single that tied the game at 7.  However, Howard stole Utley’s spotlight when he hit an opposite field two run home run to take the lead.  Ryan Madson gave up a run in the ninth again, but got Rod Barajas (LOL) to fly out to end the game.

Notes:

– If Barajas hit a walk off home run, I probably would have jumped off my roof…head first.

– I dislike TMac’s calling of a game, but I thought his call of Howard’s home run was very good.

– Remember the 8 run comeback against the Dodgers last August? Remember what kept that going? A Casey Blake error. LOL Dodgers.

-Matt Kemp went 3-4, He’d probably win the MVP if he didn’t play for the Dodgers.

-When it was 6-0,  I thought they could come back because Billingsley wasn’t sharp, but I didn’t expect it.

– Remember when a few months ago, a 2-0 deficit was almost too much? Not anymore.

-This team is incredible.
