After Raul Ibanez was scratched from the original lineup, his replacement John Mayberry hit a three run home run in a 10-0 rout over the New York Mets. Hunter Pence went 2-3 with four runs scored including a long home run. Cliff Lee was outstanding again in picking up his 14th win of the season, going seven innings, striking out seven and not giving up a run. In 41 innings in August, Cliff has given up two runs. Mets’ starter Dillon Gee wasn’t very good, not making it out of the fourth inning and giving up eight runs. Placido Polanco was activated off the DL and had two hits in his return. Wilson Valdez replaced Jimmy Rollins at shortstop and of course made an error in the first inning. The Phillies and Mets continue their three game set with Vance Worley and Jonathan Niese tomorrow.
The Phillies got to Dillon Gee in the second inning. Wilson Valdez made up for his first inning error with a RBI single to right that scored Hunter Pence. Cliff Lee followed with a single of his own. Shane Victorino, who was leading off because of Rollins being on the DL, then tripled to right scoring Valdez and Lee. John Mayberry would add-on more for the Phils with a two run home run in the next inning. Dillon Gee’s night would mercifully come to an end in the fourth inning. After he walked Mayberry to force in another run, Mets manager Terry Collins made a double switch and Ryota Igarashi was the new Mets pitcher. Things didn’t change for Igarashi. Carlos Ruiz greeted him with a two run single to make it 8-0 Phillies. Ryan Howard led off the sixth inning with a single to center which is impressive considering he had three strikeouts prior to that at-bat. Hunter Pence followed Howard with a mooooooooon shot to left field to make it 10-0. The Mets never threatened in the game with Cliff Lee dealing, only scratching out five hits. David Herndon wrapped up the last two innings, throwing up two zeros as the Phillies clinched a winning record on August 22nd.
-Phillies and Mets game aren’t the same anymore with the Mets being so bad. When the Mets were introduced before the game, the crowd was very quiet with few boos.
-Saw a Phillies fan messing with a Mets fan, my question is why? They know their team stinks, just leave them alone. If Mets fan starts to chirp, just point to the flags in center field and the conversation stops.
-Remember when people were nervous about Cliff Lee? Where are those people now?
-If you ever have a chance to sit in section 320, do it, not a better seat in the house.
– So there was a grown man in our section with a SpongeBob SquarePants hat on. Even better, he brought a Spongebob SquarePants doll with him. Strange indeed
-The Phillies have 82 wins. Remember a few years ago when 86 wins was a great season?
