The Phillies picked up their 100th win of the season in a 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. It is the third time in franchise history they have won 100 games and the first time since 1977. Jimmy Rollins had a game tying home run in the 5th inning and Raul Ibanez’s RBI single in the sixth inning was the game winner. Cliff Lee gave up two runs in six innings to win his 17th game of the year. Cristhian Martinez took the loss for the Braves. The Braves caught a break though when the Astros defeated the Cardinals. Roy Oswalt takes on Derek Lowe in game two of the series tomorrow.
The Braves jumped out a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Chipper Jones had a solo home run in the first inning and Alex Gonzalez had a RBI double in the second inning. Cliff Lee gave up four hits in the first two innings and settled down to allow just one over his final four. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning, but Raul Ibanez fouled out. (Foreshadowing….) Placido Polanco picked up his teammate though with a RBI single. Jimmy Rollins tied the game an inning later on a solo home run. In the sixth inning, Shane Victorino tripled with one out and came around to score on Raul Ibanez’s RBI single (making up for his last at bat). Raul added a big insurance run in the eight inning on an another RBI single. Brad Lidge allowed two runners on in the bottom of the eighth inning, but got Chipper Jones to ground into a double play to end the inning. Ryan Madson gave up a double, but shut the door for his 32nd save of the year.
Take a moment to reflect. 100 wins for the first time in my life. Crazy.
I guess the worried Phillies fans are okay now since they’ve won two in a row?
I’ll say it again, I don’t care who the Phillies play. They are the best team in baseball.
