2012 League Championship Series Picks

The 2012 Major League Baseball postseason has been absolutely thrilling through its first two rounds.  For the first time in LDS history, all four series were forced to play a decisive 5th game. The heartbreak of postseason defeat has been felt in Cincinnati, Washington, Oakland and Baltimore. The opposite side of the spectrum comes joyful excitement in San Francisco, St. Louis, New York and Detroit.  The final four have been set and there certainly is plenty of postseason experience between the four remaining squads.  The previous three World Series Champions remain (Cardinals ’11, Giants ’10, Yankees ’09) along with the Detroit Tigers, who reached the fall classic back in 2006 when they fell in five games to St. Louis.  If the LDS series’ were an indication as to what we can expect going forward, I’d suspect we are in for two tremendously exciting LCS series.

NL Championship Series

St.Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants

Game One – Sunday, October 14 – St. Louis at San Francisco, 8:15 p.m.
Game Two – Monday, October 15 – St. Louis at San Francisco, 8:07 p.m.
Game Three – Wednesday, October 17 – San Francisco at St. Louis, 4:07 p.m.
Game Four – Thursday, October 18 – San Francisco at St. Louis, 8:07 p.m.
*Game Five – Friday, October 19 – San Francisco at St. Louis, 8:07 p.m.
*Game Six – Sunday, October 21 – St. Louis at San Francisco, 4:45/7:45 p.m.
*Game Seven – Monday, October 22 – St. Louis at San Francisco, 8:07 p.m.

* If Necessary

Here we go again with the St. Louis Cardinals. They turned decent regular seasons into championship runs in ’06 & ’11.  Now they seem to be back at it again after solid efforts at the expense of the Atlanta Braves followed by the Washington Nationals.  The San Francisco Giants are fresh off a stimulating series victory of their own, erasing a 2-0 deficit in the NLDS. The previous two NL Pennant winners are battling it out for yet another trip to the World Series. Experience certainly doesn’t look like it will be a factor going in.

AL Championship Series

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

Game One – Saturday, October 13 – Detroit at New York, 8:07 p.m.
Game Two – Sunday, October 14 – Detroit at New York, 4:07 p.m.
Game Three – Tuesday, October 16 – New York at Detroit, 8:07 p.m.
Game Four – Wednesday, October 17 – New York at Detroit, 8:07 p.m.
*Game Five – Thursday, October 18 – New York at Detroit, 4:07 p.m.
*Game Six – Saturday, October 20 – Detroit at New York, 8:07 p.m.
*Game Seven – Sunday, October 21 – Detroit at New York, 8:15 p.m.

* If Necessary

The Yankees passed the test against division rival Baltimore in a tight series that was hard-fought through the final out. Detroit was also tested in their series against Oakland, as they were forced to overcome a Game 4 collapse that saw the Athletics come from 3 behind in the ninth inning to force the winner take all game.  What got the Yankees & Tigers into this LCS?  Aces.  Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia both tossed dominating complete games when there was little to no margin for error.  The shame of it is, we won’t be able to see these two face off against one another in the first game of this rematch series from last years ALDS.   The Tigers took that series in 5 games.
