The NBA sent a strong message on Tuesday that racist and discriminatory comments will not be tolerated. New Commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling for life from any NBA games or business related activity. Sterling was heard on tape making racist statements and making it clear he does not like minorities. The conversation started after Sterling’s girl friend V. Stiviano took a picture with Magic Johnson and posted it on her Instagram. He told her that he did not care if she associated with minorities, but to not make it public or bring them to his games. TMZ received this audio and posted it online for the media to hear. NBA players and owners were appalled by his language and slurs toward African Americans and requested swift action from the league office. Not only is Sterling banned from NBA for life but was also fined 2.5 million, which is the most the league is allowed to fine. Silver also noted that the league owners will take a vote to force Sterling to sell the team. It remains to be seen if they will be able to force Sterling to sell the Clippers, but they have certainly made it known that he is not welcome in their league anymore.
