The Philadelphia Eagles continued their fabulous off-season by signing their star running back LeSean “Shady” McCoy to a five-year contract extension. The new deal will make Shady an Eagle through the 2017 season. Last season, the Eagles’ running back led the entire league in touchdowns with 20. Along with his 20 touchdowns, he had 1,309 rushing yards and 1,624 all-purpose yards in his breakout season. According to Ruben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, McCoy is fourth in the league in scrimmage yards, sixth in rushing yards, and second in touchdowns over the last two seasons.
As an Eagles fan, I don’t know what else you could want out of the organization in the off-season. They resigned Trent Cole, DeSean Jackson, Todd Herremans, and Evan Mathis to long-term deals along with acquiring DeMeco Ryans. They also traded Asante Samuel and used some of that cap money to sign Shady. While you won’t necessary know the impact of draft picks for a while, the organization drafted several needs with picks like Fletcher Cox, Vinny Curry and Brandon Boykin. Rumors are also swirling with the team’s interest in safety Yeremiah Bell. After last year’s off-season where the Eagles spent a ton of money on free agents, this one was refreshing because the team was spending money on their own players. Training Camp starts the beginning of the NFL season and for the Eagles that begins on July 22nd. Starting July 22nd, thousands, including me, will flock to Lehigh University to watch men run around in shorts.
