Patriots sign free agent QB Tim Tebow

In non-breaking news the New England Patriots signed QB Tim Tebow last week.  Tebow is expected to be #3 on the QB depth chart behind Tom Brady and #15 Ryan Mallet.  Tebow was assigned jersey #5 by the team which looks to be permanent as jersey sales have begun.  The moves doesn’t come as shock to Patriots fans at he provides depth & versatility, two of Bill B’s favorite qualities in a football player. Will it work?  That question has yet to be answered but there is essentially nothing to lose so why not give it a shot?

Tebowmania headed to New York

The New York Jets have acquired quarterback Tim Tebow and 2012 7th-round pick from the Denver Broncos in exchange for a 4th and 6th-round draft pick in 2012. Tebow is expected to back up starter Mark Sanchez, while also being utilized in different packages.

Tim Tebow career profile & statistics

The Jets jumped on the opportunity to grab a little buzz back from the world champion Giants by acquiring one of the most polarizing athletes in modern-day sports.  The move may help the Jets on the field in allowing them to create some new packages in a run heavy offense, but ultimately the move was made with marketing on the mind.

The Jets must have been impressed with what they saw on the final drive back on November 17th.

NFL Free Agent Market Open

The NFL’s free agent market is open for business.  Rumors, news and speculation has been rolling in for weeks and we now are finally ready for some solid movement.

As signings/trades are reported check back for the “Sports with Balls” crews thoughts on the moves.

5/12 WR Randy Moss – (Titans) 49ers – 1-year/$2.5 million, with another $1.5 million possible through incentives.

– After a year of retirement, Moss makes his return to the NFL.  His workouts reportedly went out well.  The Niners take a shot that he has the desire/physical ability to still play.

5/13 WR Marques Colston – (Saints) Saints – 5-years/$40 million

– Coltson has surpassed the 1000 yard mark in receiving yard 5/6 seasons.  The Saints resign one of Drew Brees weapons for the next 5-years.  Time to turn the attention to the QB.

5/13 WR Brandon Marshall – (Dolphins) Bears – Traded for two 3rd round picks.

– Marshall caught 81 passes for 1214 yards from Chad Henne & Matt Moore. The Bears look to add production to an offense in serious need of pass catchers.

NFL Thoughts on the Playoffs

49ers 36, Saints 32

– I couldn’t help but think about Mike Singletary after Vernon Davis caught the game winner. Looks like Vernon is a winner, Mike.

– How many of you thought Drew Brees left too much time for Alex Smith on his touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham?

– Never thought Alex Smith could keep up with Drew Brees.

– Five turnovers and you still have a chance to win? Saints should be thankful they were in the game.

Patriots 45, Broncos 10

-Tough for Tebow time to get started in the 4th quarter when he’s down 42.

-Was it really necessary to have Brady punting the ball? Come on.

– Tebow will be the starter heading into camp next summer. However, it would be wise if Denver brought in competition better than Brady Quinn.

Ravens 20, Texans 13

– Arian Foster is really good.

– It’s hard not to think about how this game would have been different if Matt Schaub was the QB for the Texans.

-The Texans must be thrilled with the team heading into next year. An great offense when Schaub is healthy and a defense that is vastly overlooked will certainly be looking to take the next step.

-I’m not convinced that Joe Flacco and company can keep up with the Patriots.

Giants 37, Packers 20

-This was a flat out dominating performance by the Giants.

– Has Eli passed Peyton now? With another Super Bowl, I say yes.

-It’s crazy how every year Tom Coughlin is on the bring of being fired and his team manages to win enough to save his job.

-This game brings up the question of whether the Packers should have played more players in their Week 17 win. I would take the cautious route and make more of a preseason game. The starters would have played a half max.

NFL Thoughts, Playoff Edition

Texans 31, Bengals 10
– So the Texans hired a new defensive coordinator, brought in a corner via free agency, got contributions from their draft picks, made the playoffs, and won a playoff game? Hey at least Phil….oh never mind.

-Interesting discussion I had with someone on Facebook. Andy Dalton or Mike Vick. Based on what I’ve seen from Dalton this year, I’d still go with Vick, but that doesn’t take any thing away from Dalton. I think Dalton will have a fine NFL career.

-The Bengals finish the season with one win vs. winning opponents.

Saints 45, Lions 28

-Lost opportunities for the Lions as they couldn’t cash in when the Saints turned it over.

-Calvin Johnson is unstoppable as is Drew Brees.

-Would like to see the Lions with some kind of running game.

-Marques Colston is going to get paid. He’s a unresticted free agent, interested to see if he gets franchised.

Giants 24, Falcons 2

-All that fire power and Matt Ryan could only muster 199 yards? Matty Ice no more.

-Interesting stat from Sheil Kapadia from Philly.com’s Moving the Chain blog….The Giants had four 20+ yard runs in the regular season. Yesterday, they had two.

-Eli was fanastic as usual. He’ll need to be even better to beat Rodgers.

Broncos 29, Steelers 23 OT

-Half of my Super Bowl prediction is gone.  *Takes off expert cap*

-Tebow completed 10 passes, but threw for over 3oo yards.  As Tom McCarthy says way too much, How about that?

-Big Ben almost pulled a Tebow in the 4th quarter, but was sacked out of field goal position.
