So kidding. Lyle Overbay stinks. Not tonight though. Lyle Overbay had three hits including a two run double in the ninth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks stunned the Phillies 3-2 tonight. Roy Halladay was cruising until he gave up his first lead in the ninth inning since 2007. He had fourteen strikeouts in the complete game loss. Bryan Shaw, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, picked up the win as J.J. Putz picked up his 30th save of the year. With the Braves walking off against the Giants for the second night in a row, the Diamondbacks’ lead jumped to 3.5 games in the National League West while the Giants also fell six back in the NL Wildcard. The Braves, leading the wildcard, are also 7.5 games behind the Phillies in the NL East.
That loser Lyle Overbay (The same guy who got cut from the Pirates and was 4 for his last 40 as a Pirate) got the scoring started with an RBI single to right that scored Chris Young in the second inning. Young reached on a play that Michael Martinez should have fielded, but was ruled an infield single. Diamondbacks’ starter Josh Collementer and Roy Halladay went pitch for pitch for the most part. The Phillies’ first threat was thwarted when Hunter Pence struck out with two outs and the bases loaded on the 11th pitch of the at bat in the third inning. Collementer kept the Phillies off the board until Shane Victorino hit a line drive over the right field fence giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the 5th. The Phillies had a chance to tack on in the 7th inning when Halladay led off with a double to right. However, after Jimmy Rollins advanced Doc to third, Shane Victorino popped out and Chase Utley struck out to end the threat. Through the first eight innings, the Diamondbacks had five hits and three of them came on infield singles. However, Justin Upton and Miguel Montero lead off the ninth with singles to left and center. Chris Young then struck out on a bunt foul attempt. Lyle Overbay (who also said Charlie Morton had better stuff than Roy Halladay, you know…the guy the Phillies pounded for eight runs in the first two innings on July 29th) would then double to right scoring Upton and pinch-runner Collin Cowgil. The Phillies would bring the winning run to the plate in their last at bat, but Jimmy Rollins struck out to end the game.
Notes:
-Before the game, the Phillies unveiled the Harry Kalas statue. Absolutely perfect statue. Looks just like him.
-The spot he’s placed in is a little odd. If it were up to me, I’d put him next to his best friend, Whitey, in Ashburn Alley.
-I have zero problem with leaving Halladay in the game. I expected Halladay to get out Lyle Overbay and escape the jam. He didn’t, it happens.
– Gotta score more than two runs off of Josh Collementer, funky delivery or not.
– My mom had the Phanastormer come and sing me happy birthday. Embarrassing. Thanks section 144 for the birthday song.
– This has nothing to do with the game but I went to Jim’s Steaks for the first time. Very solid cheesesteak, but still not better than Pat’s. Any other suggestions?
